TikTok... more like Tick-Tock... as the US Congress threatens to kick the app out of America

It seems like TikTok's reign in the US and other western countries will change soon.

What's the key learning?

  • TikTok's CEO Shou Chew appeared before the US congress and dealt with sometimes weird and aggressive questions about the app.
  • While the US lawmakers are supposedly moving forward with attempts to ban TikTok — TikTok’s app users are fighting back.
  • Many TikTok users believe that the Congress should be passing laws to protect Americans' personal data, rather than simply banning a single, addictively-popular (but foreign-owned) app.

👉 Background: We know there are many concerns around the TikTok app. Think: its impact on the mental health of young users, its parent company's addictive algorithms, and most importantly, the concern that the Chinese government can access the data of US citizens.

👉 What happened: Late last week, TikTok’s CEO Shou Chew appeared before the Congress to answer their sometimes weird and often aggressive questions about TikTok.

👉 What else: But no matter what the CEO said, it seems like TikTok’s reign in the US and probably other Western countries will dramatically change soon.

💡 Many TikTok users believe that the Congress should be passing laws to protect Americans' personal data, rather than simply banning a single, addictively-popular (but foreign-owned) app.

💡But right now, the decision is in the hands of the US Congress… and it don’t look good for the big T and its parent company Bytedance.
