Google got fined $60 million by the ACCC for watching us too closely...
👉Background: Google’s has had its fair share of data-related controversies over the years. There's the 2018 Google+ data breach as well as the Project Nightingale scandal in 2019.
👉 What happened: Now the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is giving Google a $60 million fine for watching us a lil too closely.
👉 What else: Between 2017-18, up to 1.3 million Google users viewed a screen implying Google wasn’t collecting their location data, but it actually was. And that data was potentially used for targeted ads. Eeep!
💡Consumers are becoming more and more skeptical about how their data is being collected by big corporations. According to a 2021 report from KPMG, 70% of companies had expanded their collection of personal consumer data over the last year.
💡 And when it comes to individuals, a whopping 86% said they were getting more concerned about data privacy.
💡But it seems like the ACCC is coming to the rescue. It has recommended some big changes to the laws around our data, so this hefty fine could be the first page of a much longer story…
