Amazon Australia pivots its packaging plan so you won't get an iPhone cord in a box that could fit a couch

Amazon Australia found that 52% of its Australian customers would be happy to receive deliveries in original packaging.

What's the key learning?

  • Amazon will trial deliveries of items without a box, which will be better for the environment and will save them a lot in package costs.
  • Australians throw away around 1.9 million tonnes of packaging each year.
  • Many e-commerce companies are looking for ways towards a more sustainable future for the retail industry.

👉 Background: Amazon, the online retail behemoth, hit Australian shores in late 2017. And it's projected to reach $5.5 billion in Australian turnover next financial year.

👉 What happened: Recently, Amazon Australia found that 52% of its Australian customers would be happy to receive deliveries in original packaging, rather than a package in a cardboard box.

👉 What else: Now, Amazon will trial deliveries of items without a box. And not only is this better for the environment, but will also save Amazon a motza in package costs.

What's the key learning?

💡The most sustainable form of packaging is no packaging at all. And right now, many e-commerce companies are looking for ways towards a more sustainable future for the retail industry.

💡Australians throw away around 1.9 million tonnes of packaging each year—that’s enough to fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground nine times over.

💡This also has an enormous impact on a retailer's bottom line; there were more than 1 billion packages delivered across Australia in 2020 alone. And if many of these don’t require a box, it means more moula in their back pocket.
