Amazon looks to ditch free returns so we may need to take responsibility for our online shopping addictions

Amazon is attempting new measures to get customers to return fewer of their online orders.

What's the key learning?

  • Amazon will start flagging "frequently returned" products on its website and then it will start charging customers a $1 fee in the US for some returns.
  • Shoppers have become accustomed to endless free returns in recent years but this customer habit has become pretty expensive for Amazon and other companies.
  • Not only do companies have to cover costly return shipping fees but often need to be marked down to re-sell them - and retailers just can't afford to cop these costs.

👉 Background: Amazon built its business by creating an online shopping experience that was simple and super speedy free delivery. But over years, handling returns has become a very expensive problem for the ‘Zon.

👉 What happened: Amazon is attempting new measures to get customers to return fewer of their online orders:

What's the key learning?

💡Shoppers have become accustomed to endless free returns in recent years. But now, Amazon and other companies are trying to curb this customer habit because it’s becomes pretty darn expensive.

💡In the US, customers sent back around 17% of the total merchandise they purchased in 2022. In Australia, it’s estimated that the return rate is around 30% of online purchases.

💡Not only do companies have to cover costly return shipping fees but often need to be marked down to re-sell them. And in this new world of profitability, retailers just can’t afford to cop these costs.
