YES that's bigger news than the Will Smith and Chris Rock saga.
Background: The Academy Awards, aka The Oscars, are the most prestigious awards in the entertainment industry. Everyone was there - even Will Smith's palm... and Chris Rock's unprotected cheek.
What happened: The Best Picture award is the crème de la crème of the night. Every movie studio wants it. Last year, a film called CODA played at the Sundance Film Festival... and then Apple TV+ snapped it up for $25 million.
What else: Lo and behold, it won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. It's the first film distributed by a streaming service to win Hollywood's top gong!
💡 Not everyone in the movie industry is keen on streaming services winning big awards.
💡 That's because outside of COVID, streaming services are the main reason why films overlook cinemas... and enter our living rooms. In fact, Steven Spielberg said that Netflix films shouldn't even be eligible for an Oscar!
💡 But get this: half of the 10 nominees for Best Picture were from a streaming service (or premiered at cinemas and at home at the same time). And this recognition of CODA just gives streaming platforms more reason to spend big bucks on new shows.
