Lemon8, Bytedance's lifestyle social media app, jumped to the US Apple Store's top 10 charts.
👉 Background: ByteDance is the Chinese company that owns TikTok - the social media app that may be banned in the US because of data privacy issues. Just last week, the CEO of TikTok was called in to testify to TikTok’s safety in front of lawmakers.
👉 What happened: But, ByteDance is two steps ahead of the game. In 2020, they launched a brand new app called Lemon8, a lifestyle social media app that's a mix of Pinterest and Instagram. Think: aesthetically pleasing influencer-content-vibe. Last week, Lemon8 jumped to the US Apple Store’s top 10 charts.
👉 What else: What’s crazy is that before last week, Lemon8 wasn’t anywhere near the top 200 apps on the app store. TikTok might get banned in the States, but that doesn’t mean ByteDance is backing down.
💡Bytedance clearly won't take no-US as an answer. Almost two years ago, they created a backup plan ready if a TikTok ban was ever to become real.
💡Lemon8 launched in March 2020, but was tested quietly in different markets before coming out publicly in the States with a bang. And now, Bytedance is using TikTok influencers to promote Lemon8.
💡Clearly Bytedance has a plan to grow Lemon8 into another huge app in the US, so let’s see what US Congress has to say about this one.
