CNN launched a weather app as it pushes beyond cable news and tries to build stronger digital habits with audiences.
Background: CNN launched in 1980 as the world's first 24-hour news channel - something many people thought was crazy at the time. But its founder Ted Turner was so convinced CNN would outlive everything... that he even recorded a video to be aired when the world ends. Today, CNN reaches around 200 million people globally each month across TV, web, and streaming. But it's been struggling to keep up with the pace of the digital world.
What happened: As audiences continue shifting away from cable TV and toward digital platforms, CNN has launched a new standalone product called CNN Weather. The free app combines live weather forecasting with climate coverage, analysis, and storytelling.
What else: While a weather app might not sound particularly revolutionary, it's actually a part of CNN's much bigger strategy shift toward becoming a digital-first media company. Lifestyle-focused products like weather, wellness, and utility apps are increasingly being used by media companies to build daily user habits beyond traditional news consumption.
What's the key learning?
💡 Breaking news has become a commodity, so lifestyle products are how some media companies are building their moats. The old assumption was that people would pay for journalism alone. Turns out, a lot of people will also happily pay for a daily word game or a recipe app
💡 The New York Times expanded beyond journalism with products like NYT Cooking and NYT Games, plus the acquisition of Wordle, helping drive more than 11 million digital subscribers and turning lifestyle content into a major growth engine. The idea is simple: each product creates another "entry door" into the ecosystem.
💡 The goal of this is retention, not just readership. Once users build a daily habit, (whether it's a crossword, recipe, or weather check) they're far less likely to cancel their subscription. CNN is now trying to replicate this strategy after its failed CNN+ experiment in 2022, which shut down after just 29 days.
