Disney has suffered a $300m loss after its latest film bombed - looks like couches are better than cinemas

Disney's latest animated release, Strange World, has majorly bombed at the box-office.

What's the key learning?

  • Disney lost almost $300 million after its latest animated release, Strange world, majorly bombed at the box-office.
  • Viewers are too comfortable watching movies on streaming platform than to go watch them in cinemas.
  • Make your customer create the right habits with your product and they'll be hooked forever.

👉 Background: When Disney releases an animated film, it’s generally going to be a major hit, both with kids and adults (Think: Frozen, Big Hero 6, and Moana - all iconic).

👉 What happened: Disney has just released its latest animated release, Strange World, which has majorly bombed at the box-office. In fact, Disney lost almost $300 million on this film. Cinema audiences weren’t big fans…but weirdly enough, the movie was pretty popular on Disney+.

👉 What else: Disney+ has grown massively popular since it first came out in late 2019 because viewers are too comfortable watching movies on streaming platform than to go watch them in cinemas.

What's the key learning?

💡Make your customer create the right habits with your product and they'll be hooked forever. But in Disney’s case, it looks like that strategy might have backfired.

💡Over the last couple of years, Disney customers have built a habit of watching new releases through Disney+ :

  • Disney released Pixar movies Soul, Luca and Turning Red straight to Disney+ rather than in cinemas
  • They also released Black Widow and Raya and the Last Dragon in cinemas and on Disney’s Premier Access at the same time

💡So it looks like Disney’s done a bit too-good-of-a-job making their films accessible through streaming... And it’s coming at the cost of their box office.
