Elle Australia is coming back in print because reading articles on your laptop is so 2022

Elle Australia announced that they're bringing back their magazines next year in print.

What's the key learning?

  • In late 2020, Are Media brought back Elle Australia digitally, and is now bringing the magazines back in print because of a rise in print magazine readership.
  • Industries that fall out of favour aren't always gone; sometimes they return, transformed and more impactful.
  • Hard copy magazines are striking a chord with younger audiences who are into the nostalgic and collectible nature of magazines.

👉 Background: Elle is one of the world's largest fashion and lifestyle magazines with 45 editions around the world, including Elle USA, Belgium, Brazil, India and even Kazakhstan.

👉 What happened: Elle Australia has been on a real rollercoaster journey since the pandemic. In 2020, their former owner Bauer Media cut the magazine, along with seven other titles. Then later that year, its new owners Are Media brought back Elle Australia digitally.

👉 What else: But with print magazine readership on the rise, Elle Australia announced that they're bringing back their magazines next year in print.

What's the key learning?

💡Industries that fall out of favour aren't always gone; sometimes they return, transformed and more impactful.

💡It's no secret that the media industry has been shifting from print to digital. In fact, advertising in magazines fell by 70% between 2016-2021. But since then, there's been a multimillion dollar uptick in magazine advertising.

💡Hard copy magazines are striking a chord with younger audiences who are into the nostalgic and collectible nature of magazines. And, this is a trend we've seen before: think vinyl records, polaroid cameras, or retro video games.
