Elon Musk asks for time-out on AI Development because robots might just take over the world at this pace

Elon Musk and others in the big tech industry have signed a petition asking for a six month break from training AI systems.

What's the key learning?

  • There is a concern that in the race to create more powerful AI, nobody can understand, predict or reliably control it.
  • Historically ground-breaking, innovations require certain protocols to limit risk.
  • This group of 1,100 industry heavyweights believe we need to build a protocol around artificial intelligence to be confident that AI’s effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable.

👉 Background: The concept of Artificial intelligence has been around for a very long time. Think: movies like Her where Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with an operating system...Or even The Terminator with Arnold Schwarznegger.

👉 What happened: Since OpenAI released ChatGPT in November 2022, the conversation about AI has completely changed. But now, Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, alongside 1100 others in the industry have signed a petition asking for a six month break from training AI systems.

👉 What else: The concern is that in the race to create more powerful AI, nobody can understand, predict or reliably control it.

What's the key learning?

💡Historically ground-breaking, innovations require certain protocols to limit risk.

💡 Here are some examples:

  • After atomic bombs in Japan during World War Two, the International Atomic Energy Agency was created to ensure peaceful use of nuclear technology.
  • After countries began exploring outer space, the Outer Space Treaty was signed to encourage peaceful use of outer space.

💡Now, this group of 1,100 industry heavyweights believe we need to build a protocol around artificial intelligence to be confident that AI’s effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable.
