Gatorade has announced they will launch a brand, new product - water.
👉 Background: Back in 1965, a team of scientists at the University of Florida developed a sports drink to quench the thirst of their athletes. They called the drink "Gator-Aid", named after university's football team - the Florida Gators.
In 2001, PepsiCo acquired the parent company of Gatorade.
👉 What happened: Now, Gatorade has announced they will launch a brand, new product - water. But this ain't no run-of-the-mill tap water. This is supposedly a "premium water offering, purified with a 7-step, enhanced filtration process."
👉 What else: This is PepsiCo's latest venture into the sports and fitness world, after launching an energy drink, a protein shake, and a plant protein shake this year.
💡Hydration may have been the start; but PepsiCo's real game is owning every sip in your day.
💡While PepsiCo has managed to own the workout space, they're now looking to expand into the functional water market (ie water with additional health benefits).
💡The sales of functional water are expected to hit more than $24 billion USD by 2028, up from $13 billion USD in 2020. So, it makes sense that PepsiCo is targeting this growing market.
