Hungry Jack's is taking on Maccas with its very own Jack's Café and better late than never I guess

Hungry Jack's is looking to take on McDonald's by investing $20 million into drive-through barista coffee.

What's the key learning?

  • Hungry Jack's investing $20 mil to offer drive-through barista-coffee at its 410 stores nationwide
  • HJ's believes there's still a big gap in the drive-through coffee sector due to the huge growth it experienced during lockdown
  • When the world shut down, new habits were formed and embedded - and demand for products that cater to these habits hasn't slowed.

👉 Background: McCafé is Maccas' fancy coffee biz, which was actually conceptualised and first launched in Melbourne in 1993. Nowadays, one in every four cups of coffee sold in Oz is from McCafé!

👉 What happened: Hungry Jack's is now a lil jealous of Maccas' success, so it's investing $20 mil to offer drive-through barista-coffee at 410 stores nationwide. It's even trained 5,000 baristas to make sure the coffee is better at Hungry Jack's, not just the burgers 🍔.

👉 What else: HJ's admits it's a bit late to the drive-through coffee party, but it reckons there’s still big gap in the market thanks to the huge growth in the sector.

What's the key learning?

💡When the world shut down in response to the ‘rona, new habits were formed and embedded. One of those was barista-made coffee from the comfort of your car.

💡According to a 2020 survey, 48% of people said they’d bought a drive-through coffee the day before. And demand’s not winding down.

💡Just like with other lockdown habits like working from home, people are keen to hold on to the convenience of drive-through ☕️. So, we can see why Hungry Jack’s is feeling confident about its new venture.
