MCoBeauty built a beauty brand on smelling like luxury… now it smells like an expensive lawsuit

MCoBeauty’s dupe strategy faces a legal test as Sol de Janeiro sues, claiming copycat products are cashing in on its brand.

What's the key learning?

  • Dupe strategies drive growth — but increase legal risk.
  • Cheap alternatives are reshaping beauty demand.
  • Legal outcomes in dupe disputes are unpredictable.

Background: MCoBeauty is the Aussie beauty giant founded in 2019, built on one simple idea: sell products that look and smell like luxury without the luxury price tag. And that strategy worked. The brand scaled quickly across Australian retailers and online. By early last year, the founder sold the business at a $1 billion valuation.

What happened: Now, the dupe game might just be catching up with them. Sol de Janeiro, known for its beach body mists, has filed a lawsuit alleging MCoBeauty directly copied its successful Cheirosa body mist line. The claim is that MCoBeauty intentionally mimicked its scents and branding to leverage Sol de Janeiro's reputation and ride on its success.

What else: MCoBeauty's defence? Different customer, different price point. The brand has always argued

dupe seekers wouldn’t have paid higher prices for the original anyway. So now it looks like MCoBeauty, who built a brand on smelling like luxury, are starting to smell like an expensive lawsuit

What's the key learning?

💡 There's a fine line between inspiration and infringement… and dupe brands walk it on purpose. They get as close to the original as possible without technically crossing the line. But luxury brands are pushing back to protect their turf.

💡 Demand for dupes is massive...and it's growing. 61% of Australians don't feel embarrassed buying dupes, while 73% say they'd feel neutral or even proud using a no-name brand. So, Sol De Janeiro is trying to protect its market share against a company selling a similar product for almost 75% cheaper.

💡But Sol De Janeiro isn't the only luxury brand fighting back... And legal battles in the beauty industry is nothing new. Charlotte Tilbury successfully sued Aldi over a dupe in 2019. But on the other hand, Benefit Cosmetics actually lost its case against e.l.f for making a product they said was pretty similar to its mascara.

The bottom line is: This fight between luxe and dupe brands isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
