Microsoft to Apple: "Catch Me if You Can" as it announces an AI-Powered ecosystem

Microsoft is going to allow third-party developers to build their own AI-powered apps.

What's the key learning?

  • Microsoft will allow third-party developers to build their own AI-powered apps and they would offer these apps through a quasi-App store where developers could monetise their AI plug-ins.
  • While Apple had the first mover advantage with the App Store, Microsoft has it with AI-powered apps.
  • The Microsoft AI-powered ecosystem will allow them to create defensibility around their technology.

👉 Background: Open AI has been the leader in the AI space so far with ChatGPT. And over the past 12 months, Microsoft has been getting VERY cosy with Open AI:

  • Microsoft has invested $10 billion USD in January this year and integrated the GPT technology into its web browser Bing.
  • Microsoft has plans to integrate GPT into the whole Office Suite.

👉 What happened: Now, Microsoft is going one step further by allowing third-party developers to build their own AI-powered apps.

👉 What else: It would offer these apps through a quasi-App Store where developers could monetise their AI plug-ins... And this is how Microsoft plans to create its own little ecosystem in this new AI world.

What's the key learning?

💡 While Apple had the first mover advantage with the App Store, Microsoft has it with AI-powered apps.

💡The Microsoft AI-powered ecosystem will allow developers to sell AI-powered apps to customers, and help Microsoft create defensibility around their technology.

💡In the words of Eminem, Microsoft has one shot, one opportunity to seize everything it ever wanted. So it's trying to capture it... And not let it slip to Google, Alibaba, or Amazon.
