Microsoft and Samsung are teaming up to help gamers game anywhere and PlayStation, u up?

Samsung is partnering up with Microsoft to allow gamers to play Xbox even without the console.

What's the key learning?

  • Samsung is teaming up with Microsoft to offer Xbox Game Pass in its Samsung Galaxy Store, meaning gamers won't need the console to play Xbox
  • Xbox's aim is no longer to sell the most consoles but to accumulate the most players - with the goal being 3 billion globally
  • Sony PlayStation has stuck with the more traditional path of games being exclusive to the console.

👉 Background: Microsoft is the near-US$2 trillion tech company co-founded in the mid-70s. Samsung is the South Korean tech company founded back in the 30s. And recently, these two have been getting real chummy.

👉 What happened: Samsung will partner with Microsoft to offer Xbox Game Pass in its Samsung Galaxy Store. It basically means you won't even need a gaming console to play Xbox anymore.

👉 What else: This shows a willingness from Microsoft to move the Xbox console away from the gaming experience.

What's the key learning?

💡 The strategy between the two big gaming houses (Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation) has officially diverted.

💡Xbox's aim is no longer to sell the most consoles... but to accumulate the most players. It's chosen to go down the path of subscription gaming (i.e. where games can be accessed on consoles, smartphones, TVs... anywhere) to reach 3 billion gamers globally.

💡 PlayStation has stuck with the more traditional path of games being exclusive to the console. It'll be interesting to see which path wins out - or whether can both can succeed in a hugely competitive industry.
