The guilt economy: how Mother's Day became a $1 billion industry

Mother’s Day spending is booming, but meaningful gifts under $50 can matter more than expensive last-minute buys.

What's the key learning?

  • Australians are set to drop serious coin on Mother’s Day, with the average spend climbing fast
  • We break down what people are actually buying and where most of the money goes
  • The five thoughtful gift ideas that won’t blow your budget

May 10th is Mother’s Day. You remembered. Good. And if you didn’t, this is your reminder.

Now you're staring at your phone, scrolling through gift ideas, watching the prices climb higher with every tab you open.

Spa vouchers. $180. Jewellery. $250. Bunch of flowers with a ribbon on it. $95. Somehow.

Run me through the numbers

Mothers Day is actually one of the highest-converting retail events outside of Christmas, with national spending estimated to be anywhere between $600 million to $1 billion.

The trend is clear: even in a tough economy, Aussies keep spending more on Mum, according to ANZ.

So what's driving the increase? Experiences.

  • Dining has become the most popular way to celebrate, with $83 million spent at cafes, restaurants and on takeaway.
  • Travel services were up 15%
  • Watches and jewellery up 11.9%
  • Florists up 7.81%.

Here's the kicker though: around 46% of consumers shop in the final week, with more than half leaving at least one purchase to the day itself.

So if that's you right now, at least you're in good company!

So where is the money actually going?

Five thoughtful gifts under $50

The research consistently shows that what people actually want is something personal, not something expensive. Here's how to nail it without the credit card hangover:

  1. A recipe book: Print or hand-write a collection of family recipes that your Mum has made you a hundred times. It’s free (or at least cheap to print).
  2. Local market morning: Hit your nearest Sunday market together. Fresh flowers, something handmade and a good flat white. Low cost, high memory.
  3. Photo print order: There are a range of services that let you print a set of photos for under $20. Pick the ones she'd actually want on her wall.
  4. A home picnic: Grab the good cheese, some crackers, fruit, and a bottle of something nice. The vibe matters more than the venue.
  5. A letter: A handwritten note about what she actually means to you hits harder than anything from a gift shop. Every time.

Spend what you can, not what the algorithm says you should

The pressure to go big on Mother's Day is real. And retailers obviously encourage it. But the best gifts feel chosen for the person, not just purchased.

You've got until Sunday. Soooo that should be enough time to make it count.
