After a rockin' fourth season, Netflix is developing a spin-off of Stranger Things with the hopes of it becoming its first franchise.
👉 Background: Stranger Things is the sci-fi Netflix series that debuted back in 2016 and changed everyone’s Halloween costumes for life. After the success of the first three seasons, Netflix really threw its weight behind the series.
👉 What happened: Netflix needed this one to land after a rocky 12 months. But it worked! Volume one of the fourth series saw around 290 million hours watched over the course of its first weekend 📺.
👉 What else: Now Netflix says it's developing a spin-off series based on an original idea from the show’s creators. We don’t have any details just yet, but we do know it’s part of a plan to turn Stranger Things into its first entertainment franchise!
💡An entertainment franchise is where one original piece of creative work is spun off into loads of other pieces of media - and commercialised accordingly 🤑.
💡Think Lord of the Rings or Marvel with books, films, TV shows, toys... You name it! In fact, Marvel’s 22 films have grossed $17 billion USD — more than any other movie franchise in history.
💡Franchises are a home run for studios, because they represent predictable success, which leads to reliable revenue. If ya liked Stranger Things, it's likely you'll watch the spin-off or play the game too. And it's just what Netflix needs after battling slowing growth!
