Nike makes online sales unavailable in Russia

Given the conflict in Russia and Ukraine, we can excuse Nike for going agains its 'Just Do It' ethos.

What's the key learning?

  • Following the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Nike has made purchases on its website and app unavailable in Russia
  • The company says it's because it can't guarantee delivery of goods to customers in Russia and Ukraine
  • Nike's move is another example of how private companies are using their power and influence to impose sanctions against a country.

Background: Nike is the world's largest supplier of athletic shoes and apparel. We're talkin' revenue of more than US$37.4 billion in 2020.

What happened: Following the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Nike has made purchases on its website and app unavailable in Russia.

What else: The company says it's because it can't guarantee delivery of goods to customers in Russia and Ukraine, but it sounds part-logistical, part-political.

🔔 What's the key learning?

💡Nike's move is another example of how private companies are using their power and influence to impose sanctions against a country.

💡Large, Western brands are currently facing a range of challenges:

  • Logistics (aka delivery)
  • The falling value of the Russian ruble
  • Payment (because payment services have been limited in the country)
  • Reactions (aka how should private companies act in the face of war?)

💡But Nike ain't the only ones taking a stand. Hollywood studios like Disney, Warner Bros and Sony Pictures are pausing theatrical releases of upcoming films in Russia Watch this space for a whole lot more.
