Christmas spending can take a serious bite out of your budget. No-Spend November could help you save more before the festive spending frenzy begins.
Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year… until you check your bank account.

Between presents, festive catch-ups, holiday getaways and enough food to feed a small village, the silly season can do serious damage to your wallet.
Research from ASIC’s Moneysmart found that 44% of Australians had regretted their Christmas spending in previous years, while only 29% said they managed to stick to their Christmas budget.
But what if there was a way to make this year’s Christmas spending spree a little less stressful on your bank account?
No-Spend November is a personal finance trend where you press pause on non-essential spending for a month to give your savings a boost before the festive season begins.
Essentials are things like groceries, rent, bills, and medication. And non-essentials are things like clothes, takeaway coffee, home decor, new subscriptions, and impulse online purchases.
Yup, that's right. The ‘sweet treat’ on a Wednesday afternoon? Non-essential.
But this challenge isn’t about restricting yourself and being miserable.
The goal is to spend more intentionally, save some extra cash, and head into the holiday season feeling a little more financially prepared.
Habits are powerful things, but they can also work against you if you’re not careful.
That post-gym takeaway, your weekly movie night or a cheeky online purchase here and there can quickly add up to hundreds of dollars over time.
A no-spend month gives you a chance to break those spending cycles and work out which purchases genuinely add value to your life.
And with Christmas just around the corner, the money you don’t spend on random bits and bobs could be put towards presents, your summer holiday or a little buffer for those inevitable end-of-year expenses.
When you first start, and motivation is high, it’s easy to resist an impulse purchase.
But what about two weeks in, when Black Friday sales are tempting you with deals that are just too good to miss?
Here’s how to set yourself up for no-spend success.
Are you trying to get ahead on Christmas presents, save for a summer getaway or simply avoid the dreaded January financial hangover? Pick a goal that gives you something exciting to work towards. You could even move the money you save into a separate savings account so you can watch it grow.
November is full of tempting sales and pre-Christmas events, so decide upfront what counts as essential, what’s off-limits and where you’re happy to make exceptions. Got a birthday dinner or early Christmas party coming up? Budget for it rather than making a last-minute decision that throws your whole plan out the window.
Unsubscribe from those promo emails, delete shopping apps if you need to and avoid window shopping “just for fun” (because we all know how that usually ends). And when Black Friday rolls around, remember: spending $100 to save $30 is still spending $100...
No-Spend November won’t magically pay for Christmas or solve every money woe overnight. But it can give you a little breathing room before the festive spending frenzy begins.
And who knows? You might finish the month with a newfound appreciation for the stuff you already own!
Will you try No-Spend November?
