Providoor shuts the door on high-end cooking at home after just 3 years

After 3 years since it opened in Australia, Providoor has shut down.

What's the key learning?

  • Despite the repercussions of the COVID pandemic, Providoor was able to launch in Melbourne and even expand into Sydney and Brisbane, generating more than $70 million in sales in its first 18 months.
  • COVID created a false economy that lulled many into a false sense of success… or failure.
  • Providoor was built to solve a specific problem that arose during the pandemic BUT it struggled to find a way to adapt to a post-COVID world.

👉 Background: Back in early 2020, when COVID forced the whole country (and world?) into major lockdowns, many high-end restaurants were considering shutting down for good.

👉 What happened: Melbourne chef Shane Delia launched Providoor in Melbourne and expanded into Sydney and Brisbane. It generated more than $70 million in sales in its first 18 months.

  • You could order your fav meal from a high-end restaurant
  • You could complete the last 20% of the meal at home
  • You felt like a full-blown chef and it still had that element of being fresh

👉 What else: But sadly, after 3 years…and with restaurants well and truly back open, Providoor has shut down after one of its major shareholders withdrew capital.

What's the key learning?

💡COVID created a false economy that lulled many into a false sense of success… or failure. We know that it caused some businesses, like restaurants and physical retailers, to struggle big time.

💡Other businesses, that were online and in our homes were able to thrive:

  • Zoom saw its share price jump 770% at its peak
  • Peleton saw its share price jump 506% at its peak
  • Providoor was able to deliver over 1.2 million meals during the COVID restrictions

💡Providoor was built to solve a specific problem that arose during the pandemic and it struggled to find a way to adapt to a post-COVID world..
