Qantas has some pretty ambitious sustainability targets, but this latest partnership could help it achieve them.
👉 Background: It's been a rough few years for the flying Kanga... and the travel industry as a whole. But now, things are ramping back up.
👉 What happened: Qantas just announced a partnership with Airbus to invest $288 million into sustainable aviation fuel in Australia. It's all part of the airline's goal to use 10% sustainable fuel by 2030 and 60% by 2050.
👉 What else: Currently, Qantas mainly sources its sustainable fuel from the UK and the US, but the company reckons local production is crucial to achieving its target 🎯.
💡Sustainable aviation fuel is a fuel used to power airplanes. It's kinda similar to conventional jet fuel… but with a much smaller carbon footprint.
💡Rather than using coal or natural gas, sustainable aviation fuel uses stuff like household and business waste that could otherwise end up in landfill. This method can reduce up to 80% of carbon emissions.
💡The global aviation industry produces around 2.1% of all human-induced carbon emissions. So, developing and using sustainable aviation fuel is critical in the fight against climate change.
