Samsung's adding AI to its washers and fridges to help save power, so viva la robot revolution

Electricity use is becoming a major concern for households, so Samsung is bringing AI-powered appliances to Australia.

What's the key learning?

  • Electricity use is becoming a major concern for households in Australia
  • Samsung manufactures smartphones and now it's also producing AI-powered appliances
  • The uses of artificial intelligence are constantly evolving over time

👉Background: Samsung is the South Korean multinational manufacturer of TVs, Galaxy smartphones and now apparently smart washing machines, dryers and fridges.

👉 What happened: Samsung says AI powered appliances are coming to Australia soon. Think: fridges that adjust their temperature according to the weather and washing machines that use power during off-peak times.

👉 What else: It’s an interesting use of artificial intelligence, and it all comes back to the fact that electricity use is becoming a major concern for households.

What's the key learning?

💡The uses of artificial intelligence are constantly evolving over time… and the direction AI moves in depends on the needs of society at the time.

💡We wanted increased employee productivity - so we made AI chatbots to answer simple questions. Fraud was going through the roof - enter: AI fraud detection algorithms. We wanted to turn the lights off without getting up - and along came Alexa.

💡Now the cost of electricity is skyrocketing so much that 1.1 million Aussies can’t afford to use their heater this winter, according to a report from Finder. So it only makes sense that AI developers are finding a way to help tackle the power problem, too.
