Channel Seven has announced it will broadcast a cricket match played outside Australia on free-to-air TV.
👉 Background: Back in January this year, Seven signed a massive $455 million, 7 year deal with Cricket Australia.
👉 What happened: And now, Channel Seven has announced it will broadcast a cricket match played outside Australia on free-to-air TV. This is the first time in over 20 years that this has happened. The match is part of the World Test Championship and will be played between Australia and India.
👉 What else: And with these juicy deals, Channel Seven is re-committing to cricket in a big way. But ultimately, this deal reflects Australia’s evolving TV audience.
💡For Seven, this deal is less about cricket and more about Australia’s fast growing Indian community. In fact, India is now Australia’s third largest country of birth, behind Australia and England.
💡Cricket is of course a massively celebrated sport in India, and it’s one of the many things that brings Indians and Australians together. But with the growing Indian population in Australia, we’re starting to see that shared interest on a bigger scale.
💡The growing Indian migration not only increases diversity but holds some enormous economic opportunities for Australian companies… like Seven.
