Snapchat for Desktop's here, and TBH we're a little confused

Snap has been steadily adding new features to its app and now, it's launching Snapchat for Web.

What's the key learning?

  • Snap has been adding features including the OG stories, video calls, and the snap map that shows a user where their friends are
  • Both Instagram and TikTok have decent web versions and Snap wants it too
  • Most social media platforms operate on engagement because more engagement leads to more time on the app

👉 Background: We all know Snapchat, the OG disappearing photo app launched back in 2012. Snap has been been steadily adding new features ever since.

👉 What happened: First it was the OG Stories feature, then video calls and that snap map that shows you where your friends are. Now Snap is launching Snapchat for Web.

👉 What else: On the face of it kinda feels like an odd choice, until you think about the fact that Instagram and TikTok both have pretty decent web versions these days. Looks like Snap wants a slice of that sweet, sweet desktop social traffic.

What's the key learning?

💡Most social media platforms operate on the same currency: engagement - and their moves can usually be traced back to securing more of it.

💡More engagement leads to more time on the app...And more time on the app leads to more eyeballs on ads... which means more revenue for the company.

💡While it's only a modest chunk, 21% of social media views come from web browsers instead of apps. And Snapchat doesn’t wanna miss out on that engagement.
