Spotify's live audio app goes MIA - so it turns out, silence isn't always golden

Spotify has announced it will be shutting down Spotify Live.

What's the key learning?

  • Spotify created its own version of Clubhouse which was called Greenroom, and then rebranded it to Spotify Live after it struggled to gain traction.
  • Spotify shutting down Spotify Live shows how typically logical and rational decision makers can make irrational business decisions.

👉 Background: In mid 2020, an app called Clubhouse entered the scene with some major hype Then, Spotify and many other tech companies built their own versions of the audio-based app. For Spotify, it was called Spotify Greenroom.

👉 What happened: After it struggled to gain traction, they rebranded Greenroom to Spotify Live. And now, the app will be known as nothing - because Spotify has announced it will be shutting it down.

👉 What else:  It just goes to show how typically logical and rational decision makers can make irrational business decisions.

What's the key learning?

💡When a shiny new object shakes up the tech incumbents, they’ll do almost anything to shut it down.

💡Incumbent tech companies like Meta, Reddit, Twitter and Amazon all launched their own version of Clubhouse - but lo and behold, Clubhouse usage suffered when people resumed their normal routines.

💡So now, Reddit has shut down Reddit Talks, Meta has shut down Meta Rooms and Spotify is shutting Spotify Live. And it’s a timely reminder that some hype isn’t all it’s hyped up to be.
