The preliminary talks for NBA's new broadcast deal have already begun... and it will likely include a streaming service.
👉 Background: The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the professional basketball league in North America. But, the drama isn't just on the court anymore - it's also in the boardroom where billion dollar broadcast deals are done.
👉 What happened: These broadcast deals are a huge deal for NBA because they only happen once a decade. Back in 2014, the NBA sided a $24 billion USD arrangement for the next 10 years... and this deal ends after the 2024-25 season.
👉 What else: The preliminary talks have already started. And this new broadcast deal will likely include a streaming service too - like YouTube TV, Amazon, Apple, and even Netflix.
💡Live sports events are one of the few categories of programming that still have large, real-time audiences. And, this makes them a goldmine for advertisers who want to reach sports-crazy fans who can't fast-forward through commercials.
💡To date, streaming services like Netflix haven't really owned live sports yet. Netflix failed to get the F1 broadcast last year and Amazon has Thursday night NFL. But the NBA offers a huge opportunity to draw in new subscribers that stick around for a long time.
💡And since the NBA season runs from October to June, that means subscribers won't be able to binge-watch a season of live games like they do with on-demand shows like Bridgerton or the Beckham doco series.
