How does your super balance compare to others your age?

Find out how your super balance stacks up against others your age, why it matters, and easy ways to grow it for a stress-free retirement.

What's the key learning?

  • Super is literally your money and it needs love too 🥺
  • Spilling the tea on average & median super balances by age and gender
  • Couples need a balance of $690,000 and singles need $595,000 to retire “comfortably”
  • Tips on how to boost your super

Let’s be real - between remembering to book that dentist appointment, renewing your passport, and figuring out what the heck you did with your spare car key, superannuation definitely feels like something future-you can deal with.

But here’s the obvious twist: your super is your money. Yep, your money - just hanging out in a different account like a Tamagotchi you forgot to feed (only this one actually pays off later).

Giving your super a once-a-year glow-up can help make sure that, someday, you’ll be sipping mojitos in Greece instead of stressing about the cost of toothpaste.

So how do you check your balance?

Good news: it’s as easy as rewatching Friends for the 12th time

  • Just log into your MyGov account (your digital HQ for all things Aussie life admin)
  • Check your super balance and contribution history.

Alternatively, you can hop onto your super fund’s website or app if you know who you’re with (no judgment if you don’t - lost super is real, and we’ll get to that).

What’s everyone else got in their super?

Here’s a peek at what the average super balances look like across age and gender (because we all love a cheeky comparison)

Source: Deloitte Average Balances to 30 June 2024, rounded to the nearest $100. People with zero superannuation are not included in average data.

You might be looking at these numbers thinking ‘Woah I’m smashing it’ but a slight reality check… these are only typical balances, not how much you actually need to be living your best life.

Instead, the Associate of Super Funds Australia (ASFA) recommends a couple to have at least $690,000 combined balance, or a single person to have $595,000.

Obviously what’s ‘comfortable’ is different for everybody but these figures assume:

✅ You’ll rely on a part-pension

✅ You own and have paid off your home

So if you want to check if you’re on track, this calculator can give you an indication of how much you should have in your super balance to retire ✨comfortably✨

How to boost your super (because more is more)

If you’re working, your super is already growing thanks to the Super Guarantee. Right now, employers must contribute 11.5% of your salary to your super fund. From 1 July 2025, that jumps to 12% (aka, more cash stacking behind the scenes 🤑).

For example:
If you earn $80,000 a year, your super earnings will go from $9,200 per year (at 11.5% Super Guarantee) to $9,600 per year (at 12% Super Guarantee). That’s a new pair of noise-cancelling headphones, or like… a lot of avocado toast. But of course, you can’t access them now.

If your super balance is lower than the average or you want to make sure you can live it up as an oldie, here are some extra things you can do to give your super balance a boost:

Check for lost super cos you might have extra accounts floating around from a casual job you worked in highschool 🫣 You can find it through your MyGov account

Make extra contributions through salary sacrificing or after-tax payments (we have a whole article about this here)

Split contributions with your spouse or have them make spousal contributions into your account #couplegoals

Review your superfund annually to make sure you have the right level of insurance and the fees are not draining your balance

Snag a government co-contribution (up to $500) if you’re a low to middle income earner and make after-tax contributions, you’ll basically get free money 🤑
