T-Swizzle lifting her middle finger at old record labels

Taylor Swift has turned to the option-of-last-resort due to her rift with the owners of her previous records.

What's the key learning?

  • Taylor Swift has turned to the option-of-last-resort due to her rift with the owners of her previous records.
  • She's re-recording her own tunes - with the same lyrics, beats and lead singer, and finally she will be allowed to own them
  • This move could easily reduce the value of her original - which she doesn’t own

WTF is going on with Taytay?

Taylor Swift, who has notched up 10 Grammy awards may I add, started her career with a record label named Big Machine. And Big Machine recorded and retained the rights to her first six albums. Six albums that were pretty huge, with bangers like Love Story, I knew you were trouble and even Shake it off.

But sadly, her albums have been thrown around faster than a quarterback's NFL throw. Big Machine sold her recordings to a music manager named Scooter Braun who was accused of bullying Taylor Swift.

Scooter Braun then sold her music rights who then sold the music rights to an investment firm named Shamrock Holdings for a reported $380 million. So everyone...APART from T-Swizzle herself actually is owning her music - despite desperately trying to own it.

In 2018, TayTay struck a new deal with record label Universal, that will give her ownership and control over her new music. But not that music from 2006 to 2017. So T-Swizzle has unlocked a lil loophole - she has started re-recording and releasing all her previous banger albums.

So what's the key learning?

This is a case of revenge by re-release. By not “owning” her music, Taytay is essentially unable to give permission or earn revenue from all her previous albums

That’d be licensing her music for things like:

  • Ads
  • Movies
  • TikTok
  • Spotify

But by re-recording her own tunes - with the same lyrics, beats and lead singer, she will be allowed to own them and earn royalties from them. Game, set and match. T-Swift.
