Tabcorp has started its post-breakup transformation and it may just be the wake-up call it needs

Tabcorp and Tattslotto and Keno were all part of one biz, until they split up...

What's the key learning?

  • Tabcorp's pro-forma revenue was down 4.3% but now it has narrowed its focus to one 'hero metric' - increasing its digital market share
  • Tabcorp's market share jumped to nearly 25% of the digital betting market
  • For a company to succeed in executing its goals, it needs to make sure it is laser-focused

👉Background: Tabcorp is the owner of TAB retail venues around Australia as well as the Sky Racing channel. And recently, Tabcorp has come out of a bad break up.

👉 What happened: Tabcorp and Tattslotto and Keno were all part of one biz... but they split up because it just wasn't working. Now, Tabcorp has released its first results since becoming a single pringle. While its pro-forma revenue was down 4.3% - Tabcorp has announced its post-breakup transformation.

👉 What else: Tabcorp is exercising, eating better and even socialising again. In other words, it has narrowed its focus to one key metric - or ‘hero metric’ as they call it - increasing its digital market share in the betting space. Its market share jumped to nearly 25% of the digital betting market.

What's the key learning?

💡For a company to succeed in executing on its goals, it needs to make sure it is laser-focused. This focus is often called the 'one-metric-that-matters' or 'hero' metric.

💡Having one simple goal means that the team is aligned, investment is made in the right areas and shareholders know what to look out for in the next investor update.

💡For Tabcorp, it has recognised that increasing its digital market share is the one metric that matters. So it is investing $150m to push into its digital product and gain some market share of Sportsbet who owns 50% of the digital betting market.
