The EU bans Russian state-backed media

And they're calling in big tech for back up. Oh, how the tables have turned...

What's the key learning?

  • The EU has banned Russian state-backed media outlets Russia Today and Sputnik to limit propaganda on traditional broadcast
  • To back the EU, a number of big tech companies have announced their own restrictions on Russian state-backed media
  • While regulators were waging war with big techs before...now they need their help to limit misinformation and reduce Russia's global influence.

Background: In the last week, we've seen major companies try to exert economic influence over Russia:

  • Companies have divested from Russian businesses (see here, here and here)
  • Companies have stopped selling Russian products (ahem Dan Murphy's...).

What happened: Now, the EU has banned Russian state-backed media outlets Russia Today and Sputnik to limit propaganda on traditional broadcast.

What else: And it looks like it's all hands on deck. To back the EU, a number of big tech companies have announced their own restrictions on Russian state-backed media.

🔔 What's the key learning?

💡While regulators were waging war with big techs before...now they need their help to limit misinformation and reduce Russia's global influence.

💡We've got Twitter reducing the visibility of Russian state media-linked outlets...Facebook blocking Russian state media from running ads...Google banning downloads of state-owned media outlet apps and more.

💡So, big tech may have been enemy #1 about 5 minutes ago...but now, the regs and big tech are rekindling their relationship. Kinda like Thor and his brother/former nemesis, Loki.
