Turkish Airlines weren't able to expand its air rights to Australia because it didn't receive the government's approval.
👉 Background: Turkish Airlines is the national airline of Turkey and it flies to more destinations than any other airline in the world. For a while now, Turkish Airlines has been trying to expand its air rights to Australia from 4 flights a week to 14 flights a week.
👉 What happened: But now, Turkish Airlines has had to put their plans on hold because they didn't receive the Aussie government's approval. On top of that, the Federal government also refused Qatar Airways' application to operate 21 new flights each week.
👉 What else: It's no secret that flights to anywhere in the world from down under have been insanely expensive of late. And more supply of flights will mean more competitive pricing - but the Australian Government is holding its air rights tightly.
💡Aviation goes beyond just managing flight routes and schedules. There are a lot of legal and political considerations, especially when it comes to air rights.
💡Air rights are the legal authority that an airline needs to fly a particular route. And, governments are the ones that control air rights.
💡The Australian Government is holding its air rights tighter than Ryan Gosling's hand on his future Oscar. The problem is that less flights mean less competition for Qantas and its bulging flight prices and profits.
