Uber Eats cops a fine for spamming 2 million Aussies.. and weren't the Kim Kardashian ads enough spam?!

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has fined Uber Australia for breaching the Spam Act.

What's the key learning?

  • Uber Australia is fined $412,500 for incorrectly sending over two million marketing emails for alcohol delivery.
  • The marketing email didn’t give users any way to unsubscribe, and 500,000 of these emails were sent to customers who have previously unsubscribed to these communications.
  • While the cost of sending emails is dirt cheap, the cost of breaching the “email” law is starting to become veeeery costly.

👉 Background: Over the last few years, Uber Eats has pushed their marketing hard in Australia. Think: Uber Eats ads with Kim Kardashian, Kendall and Kris Jenner, Simon Cowell and even Draco Malfoy (...I mean Tom Felton).

👉 What happened: Now, Uber Eats is in hot water for breaching the Spam Act. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has fined Uber Australia $412,500 for incorrectly sending over two million marketing emails for alcohol delivery.

👉 What else: The marketing email didn’t give users any way to unsubscribe. On top of that, 500,000 of these emails were sent to customers who have previously unsubscribed to these communications. Ouch!

What's the key learning?

💡While the cost of sending emails is dirt cheap, the cost of breaching the “email” law is starting to become veeeery costly.

💡Email campaigns can cost a few cents per email
—and sometimes even free - so companies are often tempted to send major email blasts - but ACMA is starting to enforce spam rules.

💡And so far, ACMA has fined some big name companies over $11 million in just the last 18 months.
