Uber Australia aims to be carbon neutral by 2040...so it's bringing a whole lotta EV cars in its partnership with Splend.
👉 Background: Uber hit Aussie shores back in 2012 and since then Aussies have taken more than 700 million Uber rides and ordered more than 450 million meals via Uber Eats.
👉 What happened: All those Uber rides means a whole lot of carbon emissions. So now, Uber Australia is partnering with an Aussie car rental company called Splend that will allow Uber drivers to buy Polestar EV cars.
👉 What else: As a sweetener for drivers, they’ll get access to half price Uber fees and at-home charging stations. It’s all part of Uber’s ambitions to become carbon neutral by 2040.
💡While Uber isn't actually creating the carbon emissions, it is facilitating the emissions through the petrol-guzzling, street-zoomin’ Uber cars. And for that reason, it is also taking ownership for its impact on the climate.
💡In fact, Uber is considered to generate 70% more carbon pollution than the trips it has displaced (ie private cars and public transport).
💡Some of the alternatives include mass transit like trams or trains or non-carbon emitting options like walking or cycling. So it makes sense why Uber is keen to electrify its vehicles..and give a good discount to its drivers who are also on board.
