Uber partners with NYC taxis amid driver shortage

Uber and taxis have had a bit of a rocky relo over the years, but now, the two are teaming up.

What's the key learning?

  • Uber has announced a new partnership with New York City cabbies that will let users hail taxis through its app, and let drivers accept
  • Marketplaces like Uber often face the challenge of having to build both the supply and demand side of things
  • To prop up the supply-side of things, Uber's had to make a deal with cabbies and restore their marketplace to balance.

Background: Uber and taxis have had a bit of rocky relo over the years. Ya know, Pam and Tommy Lee...or Selina and Cody from MAFS vibes.

What happened: Now, Uber has announced a new partnership with New York City cabbies that will let users hail taxis through its app, and let drivers accept.

What else: COVID really hurt the ridesharing industry. Riders weren't riding... and drivers weren't driving. So now, Uber's trying to stem its driver shortage by teaming up with its arch-nemesis.

🔔 What's the key learning?

💡 Right now, demand for Uber's marketplace is a little... imbalanced. Have ya noticed your Uber getting cancelled a million times lately? Or prices surging?
