Weight Watchers’ quarterly sales sink despite extra COVID kgs

Enough with the tiny portions, WW. Get with the times - sheesh!

What's the key learning?

  • Weight Watchers is the $1.5 billion weight loss company backed by Oprah Winfrey.
  • Even though 4 in 10 people in the US said they gained unwanted weight during the pandemic, WW posted a 7% decline in sales.
  • Consumers are still prioritising their health, but they're focusing more on holistic health goals rather than just their diet.

Weight Watchers is the $1.5 billion weight loss company backed by Oprah Winfrey (yep - she’s got an 8% stake in the company).

And even though 4 in 10 people in the US said they gained unwanted weight during the pandemic, this just didn't translate into more cash for WW.

Instead, Weight Watchers actually posted a 7% decline in sales last quarter. And then their share price took a 30% nose dive. Ouuuch.

So what's the key learning?

Consumers are still prioritising their health, but they're focusing more on holistic health goals rather than just their diet.

People aren't satisfied with Weight Watcher's bird-like portions to manage their weight, choosing instead to focus on fitness apps (which grew by 46% during COVID) and meditation apps (like Calm, which was the top-grossing health app last year) and ready-made meals.

WW just hasn't kept up with the times.
