Australia’s economy is growing, but rising living costs mean many households aren’t feeling the boom. Welcome to the boomcession.
Ever feel like you’re living in The Truman Show, where everyone’s in on something you’re clearly missing?
You turn on the news and hear the economy is expanding, businesses are growing and unemployment is low!
But beneath the surface (and in your bank account) you might be experiencing a very different financial reality.

Well, we’re here to tell you, you’re not going crazy! There’s actually a term for this weird paradox.
A mash-up of boom and recession.
A boomcession describes an economy that’s growing while many households feel like they’re stuck in the financial trenches.
Despite economic measures like GDP growth, share markets, and unemployment rates showing positive signs, people feel like they’re struggling to pay for everyday essentials.
This is partly because wealth is concentrated in certain areas, so the benefits of economic growth aren’t always shared equally.
The short answer? We’re seeing some of the signs, but it’s complicated.
Australia’s economy grew by 2.1% over the year (June 2025 - June 2026), which suggests our economy is still expanding rather than shrinking.
And the unemployment rate was around 4.7% in September (still relatively low), even with unemployment creeping up over the past year.
Cost of living is where things get real for most Aussies.
Inflation has been trending upwards in the past year, which has prompted the Reserve Bank of Australia to increase the cash rate several times.
Oftentimes this means even if your pay increases, higher everyday costs can swallow up that extra cash before it has a chance to make a difference.
Add in stretched housing affordability and rising fuel costs, and it’s easy to see why the economic headlines might not match the bank balances of everyday Aussies!
When money feels tight, it’s easy to think you should be further along in life by now.
But your finances don’t exist in a bubble. Rising living costs, sky-high housing prices and whatever life throws your way can all affect how quickly you get ahead.
And while you can’t control interest rates or house prices, you can start with a few small steps:
Remember, you might not be where you want to be just yet, but small, realistic steps count too!
