WiseTech Global lost over $2B in value as fresh allegations against founder Richard White deepened investor concerns.
Background: WiseTech Global is one of Australia's biggest software success stories. Founded in 1994, it's best known for CargoWise, the logistics platform that helps freight companies move goods globally without losing track of what's in the container. Since listing on the ASX in 2016, WiseTech's market value has grown more than 600%, with the company once valued at over $22 billion.
What happened: Over the past year, WiseTech's share price has fallen by 71% after it has been hit by wave after wave of controversy such as:
Earlier this week, things escalated further when more than $2 billion was wiped off WiseTech's market value after reports emerged that police are allegedly investigating Richard White over new allegations.
What else: WiseTech is trying to distance itself, saying the alleged police investigation is not into the company itself. But that did little to calm investors.... with shares plunging 18% to a five-year low. Analysts are also warning WiseTech's evaluation could fall another 20% if Richard White is forced out over the scandal, highlighting just how dependent the company remains on its founder.
What's the key learning?
💡 Founder dependency is when a company relies on a founder so much, that the business can't grow with them. In WiseTech Global's case, Richard White is seen as the central to the company's success.
💡 If he stays involved in the company he co-founded, the allegations could hurt both his reputation and the company's. If he leaves, investors may worry about what that means for WiseTech's leadership, innovation, and future growth.
💡 Founder risk isn’t unique to WiseTech. Uber faced uncertainty after Travis Kalanick left in 2017. Yet Uber’s market value grew from around $48 billion USD in 2017 to roughly $145 billion USD today under new leadership... proving that losing a star founder doesn’t always mean losing the game.
