Woolies wants to show grocery delivery startups who's boss by launching its own rival product

Woolies is taking on the likes of Milkrun and Voly with a new 60-minute grocery delivery app.

What's the key learning?

  • Woolies is launching a new app that offers door-to-door grocery delivery within an hour for $5
  • This puts pressure on startups like Milkrun and Voly, but they may have first mover advdantage
  • First mover advantage is when a company gains an advantage against its competitors by being the first to the market with a product or service.

👉 Background: Woolies is Australia's biggest supermarket chain. Interestingly, this crew has been offering delivery options since way back in the nineties!

👉  What happened: Delivery really took off in 2010, but now Woolies is taking things one step further with a new app called Metro60. It'll offer door-to-door grocery delivery within an hour for just $5, thanks to a partnership with Uber.

👉 What else: This is the first big corporate we've seen seen enter the speedy delivery space... So the big question is whether Milkrun and Voly's first mover advantage is big enough to fight off Woolies 🤺.

What's the key learning?

💡First mover advantage is when a company gains an advantage against its competitors by being the first to the market with a product or service. First movers are almost always followed by copycat competitors.

💡Amazon created the first online bookstore - and was hugely successful. By the time competitors came into the space, Amazon was already a few steps ahead in terms of brand recognition and customer loyalty. It was the same deal with BNPL companies like Afterpay and Zip.

💡In the instant delivery space, most of the startups were only formed in the last 12 months, so they haven't really had the same opportunity to build their brand or customer loyalty before Woolies stepped in. Watch this space.
