Soon enough, YouTube will be more than just cat videos and gamers... because it's inking deals with Aussie broadcasters.
👉Background: In recent years, Australians have embraced subscription TV in record numbers. In fact, subscription memberships for platforms like Netflix and Disney+ were up 22 per cent over the past 12 months.
👉 What happened: Now YouTube, which is owned by Google, is keen on inking deals with Aussie broadcasters. This would allow them to sell subscriptions to services like Stan and Foxtel’s Binge directly through YouTube.
👉 What else: Word around town is that the product was being marketed as “YouTube A La Carte” and could become the future of the way we start our TV watching experience.
💡If you own the customer, you could own the future of the industry. YouTube recently said 11 million Australians watched YouTube through a connected TV in May this year alone - so it could provide a large distribution to Australian streaming platforms.
💡For YouTube, this agreement could mean it essentially becomes a TV watcher’s ‘home screen’. And that means YouTube could gradually become a customer’s way to access all subscriptions through one app.
💡It’s unclear how progressed this proposition is, but if they get the deal done, YouTube could rule the roost for streaming platforms - just like Google does for Search.
