YouTube will shut down its Stories feature to focus on key areas like Shorts, live videos, and even community posts.
👉 Background: After the success of Snapchat and Instagram Stories, YouTube tried to get in on the fun. YouTube first rolled out its Stories feature back in 2018 and it was initially offered to creators with more than 10,000 subscribers.
👉 What happened: Despite the feature's 'unique' angle of sticking around for a whole week unlike Snapchat and Instagram stories, it never truly took off... Now, YouTube will shut down its Stories feature to focus on key areas like Shorts, live videos, and even community posts.
👉 What else: YouTube reckons that its creators who used both Stories and Community Posts saw "many times more comments and likes" with the Community Posts. So, they bid adieu to Stories with the hope of getting more attention...
💡The attention economy is a concept that recognises the scarcity of human attention and its increasing value in the information age.
💡The businesses that flourish in this economy are those that capture attention AND maintain the attention of consumers. Youtube isn't just competing against other social media platforms for attention - but also streaming services, TV networks and even time hanging with friends at a park.
💡So with YouTube Stories not gaining the attention it would like, YouTube is focusing on formats that do capture attention... Because having attention is having an opportunity to show ads and make big money.
