Deliveroo and VOLY both said they would be shutting down in Australia... and now, Coles is swooping with its new click-and-collect orders.
👉 Background: Over the past week or so, it is fair to say the food delivery sector has been in the spotlight. Deliveroo and VOLY both said they would be shutting down in Australia.
👉 What happened: And now, Coles is swooping. It has announced that its click-and-collect orders would now be available for pick-up within 60 minutes at 400 of its stores.
👉 What else: But on top of its click and collect, Coles is cosying up to Uber and DoorDash to help manage its deliveries too. Because even supermarkets need a speedy-delivery option these days.
💡Just because consumer demand is strong doesn’t mean the business model works. Despite the enthusiasm for food delivery services like Deliveroo or instant grocery delivery services like Voly or Send, the business model hasn't yet proven to stack up.
💡But despite the business model failing, these businesses have created a shift in consumer expectations. Put simply, we've all come to expect fast delivery service over the past two years.
💡And so now supermarkets are developing new methods for pick-up and delivery that works for the consumers' instatiable need for speed. But Coles’ CEO is honest - the industry is still working out the best model for getting groceries to shoppers pronto.
