Most products have some environmental claims these days, so the ACCC needs to move into action to get those verified.
👉 Background: Whether it’s “environmentally friendly” or “biodegradable” or “sustainable” or “made with love”, it seems like most products have some environmental claim these days.
👉 What happened: For consumers, this is challenging because it’s pretty hard for us to verify the claims that are on these products - so we tend to trust it.
👉 What else: But now, the ACCC is pulling a Liam Neeson from Taken. If sustainable claims smell a little fishy, the ACCC will need those claims to be verified. We’re talking scientific reports, transparent supply chain information and certifications.
💡As consumers become more conscious of climate change risks, they become more demanding of businesses to adopt sustainable practices.
💡Two-thirds of consumers say they will pay more for sustainable products, according to a report from the University of Pennsylvania. And as a result of that, there are a heap of brands looking to exploit these consumers.
💡The ACCC is following the lead of the ACM in Netherlands which has forced H&M and sporting retailer, Decathlon, to remove some of their sustainability claims. So in the future, when we buy something sustainable, hopefully we will know its sustainable.
