Atlassian shares sink more than 10% in after-hours trading and not even AI can save the day

Atlassian's recent results recorded a net loss of $209m.

What's the key learning?

  • Atlassian warned that they’re expecting slowing revenue in the final quarter of the financial year.
  • Atlassian threw in an announcement about new Atlassian AI to sweeten the deal, but investors had heard enough… and not even the AI could get them over the line.
  • After-hours trading is the trading of stocks after the regular market closes. And, this is something that exists in the US share market.. But not really on the ASX.

👉 Background: Atlassian is the Australian-founded tech giant that’s been listed on the NASDAQ since 2015. It has a range of popular collaboration and productivity tools like Jira, Confluence, and Trello.

👉 What happened: Atlassian has released its results for the most recent quarter: total revenue was up 24 per cent on the same period in 2022 (that's good!) but they recorded a net loss of $209m (that's bad). And on top of that, Atlassian warned that they’re expecting slowing revenue in the final quarter of the financial year.

👉 What else: They threw in an announcement about new Atlassian AI (Atlassian Intelligence) to sweeten the deal, but investors had heard enough… and not even the AI could get them over the line. Nek minute: the share price dropped nearly 13% in after-hours trading.

What's the key learning?

💡After-hours trading is the trading of stocks after the regular market closes. And, this is something that exists in the US share market.. But not really on the ASX.

💡Typically, in the US, the trading hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). But they also allow for after-hours trading - this is typically between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. During this time, investors can continue to trade stocks through electronic communication networks or ECNs.

💡Often news or data can be released after the close of the day and investors want to make moves fast. But since after-hours trading has less people trading and smaller quantities, it means that stock prices can often be more volatile.
