CNN joins the streaming service race... 4 years too late

CNN has announced a new streaming service with a very 'creative' name

What's the key learning?

  • Cable TV brands, like CNN, have realised they need to have a direct relationship with customers
  • In the past, cable TV channels would earn revenue through advertisers and Pay TV providers.
  • CNN is now attempting to create a direct relationship with customers...hence the new streaming platform

BIG SURPRISE, ANOTHER STREAMING SERVICE

CNN is the OG global news provider that you prob know as your parents' fav PayTV channel.

CNN has announced that it is launching a new streaming service called CNN+.

Users will pay a subscription to CNN+ and get access to 8 to 12 hours of exclusive and original content. Kind of like Netflix, but for documentaries and news.

So, what's the key learning?

The PayTV or ‘cable’ industry has woken up around 20 years too late. They’ve realised that they need to have a direct relationship with consumers.

A popular Pay TV channel like CNN would earn revenue from advertisers or a PayTV provider like Foxtel. And you, the consumer, would pay Foxtel directly.

There is no direct relationship between you and the channels you love. So CNN is trying to make their ‘direct to consumer’ strategy work (again and again).
