Kmart is shifting its home-brand Anko into proper-brand Anko and this could be our greatest export since Margot Robbie

Kmart reckons it's time to expand the Anko brand beyond the humble shores of Australia.

What's the key learning?

  • Kmart's fanatical Facebook groups and Instagram followers have been helping the company grow sales, with its revenue jumping 24 per cent for the six months to December 2022.
  • Kmart plans to expand the Anko brand and its first stop would be Canada.
  • In the retail industry, sometimes wholesaling is a better way to go global than retailing.

👉 Background: Over the last few years, Kmart’s home-brand products have been growing in popularity big time. We’re talkin Anko red wine glasses, Anko gym ball, Anko wooden pegs. You want it, Anko got it.

👉 What happened: Kmart's fanatical Facebook groups and 1.2 million Instagram followers seem to be helping the company grow sales big time. In fact, Kmart Group, which includes Target, saw its revenue jump 24 per cent for the six months to December 2022.

👉 What else: Now, Kmart reckons it’s time to expand the Anko brand beyond the humble shores of Australia. First stop: Canada.

What's the key learning?

💡In the retail industry, sometimes wholesaling is a better way to go global than retailing. Kmart could try and set up its own physical stores overseas - but that would require expensive branding, marketing as well as time and resources.

💡Finding global retail partners that will sell Anko products means Kmart can tap into global demand for affordable, stylish products without building a huge physical presence.

💡 And it ain’t just Canada that Kmart is feeling optimistic about. Kmart is already chatting to retailers in Europe, Africa, Asia and the US about selling Anko products into their stores.
