Telstra will plant 158,000 trees to offset its emissions

The telco's fed up with the Government's carbon credit scheme... so it's taking matters into its own hands.

What's the key learning?

  • Telstra's will plant 240,000 hectares of land in norther NSW and use drones to seed plant 158,000 native trees and shrubs on that plot
  • The plan is to offset its use of energy and remove the need to rely on carbon credits
  • Carbon credits allow big polluters to offset the carbon dioxide (CO2) they emit by buying 'credits'
  • The reality is, there just ain't that many units out there to effectively offset carbon, which means there's a limited supply of carbon credits for businesses to purchase.

Background: Telstra's been carbon neutral since 2020, but it wants to reduce its greenhouse emissions even more. And, while the gov has its own carbon credit scheme... it ain't working so well.

What happened: So, Telstra's hatched a plan to plant 240,000 hectares of land in norther NSW. Then, it'll use drones to seed plant 158,000 native trees and shrubs on that plot.

What else: The plan is to offset its use of energy and remove the need to rely on carbon credits.

🔔 What's the key learning?

💡 Carbon credits allow big polluters to offset the carbon dioxide (CO2) they emit by buying 'credits'.

💡 So, if a company needed to offset 1,000 tonnes of CO2, they'd buy 1,000 carbon credits. The money goes towards land restoration projects to re-establish native vegetation... and remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

💡 The reality is, there just ain't that many units out there to effectively offset carbon, which means there's a limited supply of carbon credits for businesses to purchase. So, Telstra took matters into its own hands.
