TikTok is moving into e-commerce with Shopify partnership

What's the key learning?

  • TikTok has partnered with e-commerce platform Shopify to allow merchants to sell their items, and users to buy them.
  • They say it's to help the 'creator economy', which is where influencers earn money through their influence.
  • But is that all it's about? TikTok might have short vids down pat - but they need to up their e-commerce game to stack up against Facebook and Instagram.

TikTok - aka the most addictive social media app in the world - does just about everything. You can lip-sync to vids for fun, advertise your brand and now, you can do your shopping.

TikTok has partnered with e-commerce platform Shopify to allow merchants to create, run and operate TikTok marketing campaigns from their Shopify dash.

But that's not all. Now, TikTok Business accounts can add a 'shopping' tab to their TikTok profiles, and users will be able to shop directly from those accounts. Another place to spend your cash, Flux fam!

So what's the key learning?

The creator economy is where anyone famous online can earn an income through their influence. And it's hugely powerful.

There are around 50 million creators today, and big platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Insta and now TikTok pay big bucks to get creators on their platforms. It brings the sites higher user-engagement, and it allows the creators to make more money.

But is this all it's really about? Short TikTok-like vids are all the rage. And we've seen Insta try and copy TikTok with their reels. But FB and Insta also have something TikTok want: e-commerce. Challenge accepted.
