The US Soccer Federation finally implemented gender pay parity so, AFLW, you listening?

The US women's soccer team has also been more successful than the men's lately, just sayin'.

What's the key learning?

  • There are still massive gender pay gaps in most professional sports.
  • Change is spreading, but it's a slow process.

👉 Background: Historically, men's and women's teams across many sports have not been paid equally. For example, retired US soccer star Landon Donovan earned US$4.25 million, yet Megan Rapinoe earns $447,000.

👉  What happened: The US Soccer Federation is finally moving with the times. They've announced new collective bargaining agreements promising to match men's and women's soccer salaries in the US.

👉 What else: This didn't happen overnight. The win comes after a massive push from female US soccer stars who led the team to win the Women's World Cup championship in 2019. It's all part of a global trend.

🔔 What's the key learning?

💡 Even though women's participation in sports has grown over the years, there are still enormous pay gaps in most sports.

💡US male athletes in  golf, soccer, baseball, basketball, and tennis make anywhere from 15% to nearly 100% more than female athletes. Now more women are entering sporting governance positions and we're starting to see change.

💡Now 83% of sports give men and women equal prize money, buuut that's only really at the world championship level. The money is slowly reaching individual countries and sports... Next up AFLW? There was a 94% pay rise announced last week, but still no parity with the fellas!
